St. Augustine

St. Augustine

Driven by two passions: one for the pleasure of the world and the other for the Truth. He realised the emptiness of seeking the fullness of life form the world. At the age of 31, he turned to the Truth and that led him to change his life.

After the conversion he wrote in his book Confessions:

"Late have I loved Thee, O Lord; and behold,
Thou wast within and I without, and there I sought Thee.
Thou didst call, and cry, and burst my deafness.
Thou dist gleam, and glow, and dispel my blindness.
Thou didst touch me, and I burned for Thy peace.
For Thyself Thou hast made us,
And restless our hearts until in Thee they find their ease.
Late have I love Thee, Thou Beauty ever old and ever new."

St. Augustine pray for us sinners. Amen.

New life from Brokenness

New Life from Brokenness

Are we Prefect beings? The thought of Brokenness came alive to my friend Joyston and myself, as we were listening a song called, “I wanna get better,” by Bleachers. The sentence that struck us thus goes: “I did not know, I was broken till I wanted to change.” Reflecting on this, we admitted that we are broken people. This very thought impelled us to look into the Scriptures as well.

Some images of the brokenness that come to us are as follows: PERSONS-BROKENNESS-TRANSFORMATION

Prodigal son-Pig sty-RESTORATION OF DIGNITY AND AUTHORITY
St. Paul-Horse fall-THE REALIZATION OF THE TRUTH
Jacob-the injury of hip bone-BLESSING OF GOD
Job-calamity-ABUNDANT BLESSING
Abraham-the sacrifice of Isaac-BLESSED TO BE THE FATHER OF GREAT NATIONS
Joseph-slavery and imprisonment-SAVIOUR OF THE ISREALITES FROM FAMINE
Peter-denial-HEAD OF THE APOSTLES
Two Disciples-Emmaus-SIGHT AND FLAME OF LOVE

The brokenness of Jesus heals and empowers them to take u-turn in their life....The brokenness of Jesus makes us whole. It is His wounds that heal us. In all the brokenness, we see that there is new beginning; abundant grace flowing in, new life coming forth and transformation taking shape.

In all these cases, there is total acceptance of their failures and a great desire to progress. The words of St. Paul make sense, when he says: “When I am weak, then I am strong.” In the complete helplessness of one’s life, and in the acceptance of one’s brokenness, grace begins to work and compassion begins to flourish. This humble acknowledgement of one’s wounded nature is the real beginning of progress. The journey towards wholeness begins by embracing one’s vulnerability together with one’s strengths in serenity.

Great news for you! New life comes from brokenness.

Brokenness

Brokenness
Group Prayer (30mts)

Dear friends, let us spent this half an hour in journeying within our inner-most selves. Deep within our hearts, we seek the Lord like a deer that longs for flowing streams. There is great thirst for God especially when we find ourselves broken and our souls cast down. In those moments we affirm our souls saying, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.”

Let us surrender ourselves to the Lord and pray as we listen to Ps. 42 being sung, a psalm which expresses longing for God and His Help in Distress. (Song Ps. 42 from Praise Sing)

Three things in Life

Three things in Life

In the pursuit of growth into fullness of life, there are three things in life that every one experiences: Powerlessness, Brokenness, Pain and suffering.

These three things may appear in any of the four dimensions of life: Physical, Spiritual, intellectual, and emotional. In the face of this reality, there are two ways that many would likely to respond. One group may respond to powerlessness by control, brokenness by denial, and pain and suffering by rebelliousness. While, the other may surrender their powerlessness, truly accepting their brokenness and becoming more compassionate in moments of pain and suffering.

The path of surrender, acceptance and compassion, can make life more meaningful and whole.

Youth: Progress and Capacity to Love

I would like to begin with two assumptions: i) In the depth of every young person there is a desire for progress in life and ii) The young have a tremendous capacity to love.

Youth search for meaning in life and to achieve this, they may take different paths. Secondly, young people have tremendous energy or the capacity to love. In the venture to search for purpose in life and in exercising the capacity to love, one may acquire some bruises. Failures teach many lessons for life. No one is perfect and shall not become perfect, there is always room for improvement as they say. Basing ourselves on the two assumptions, we can reflect on the two questions: “What attitude do I require as I embark on the endless journey of growth?” and “What it means to Love oneself genuinely?”

In the depth of every young person there is a desire for progress in life:

As years pass by one begins to consciously strive for progress in life: Intellectually, Emotionally, Physically and Spiritually. In this adventure and discovery, one meets improvements and failures. Young people have lots of energy but less experience in life, therefore most of the times, there is a clash between the ideal and the real situation of life. This is clearly manifested in the effort to achieve something or become somebody within a short span of time and space. With all the good will to make progress, often young people push themselves too much. In which ever area, that one is focussing to improve, one has to give time, energy, and lots of positive strokes like self-encouragement, self-affirmation, and good-treat as well, whenever one does fine.

The picture of Human vulnerability becomes clearer as the young grow up. Now, the question arises, “how do I face this vulnerability?”  Perhaps, there can be two obvious ways to face this reality: i) to fight against it or ii) to accept and embrace the vulnerability and grow with it harmoniously. The latter is more humane way of accepting life. It calls for unconditional acceptance of oneself with all limitations and strengths. It calls for genuine love of oneself. They say, “Charity begins at Home.” Love of oneself is necessary; if only one practices love for oneself, then he or she will know how to love the other as well. Many questions arise in this regard: Am I comfortable with myself? Do I spend some time listening to my inner voice? Do I encourage myself for the good I do? Do I take care of my health? Do I forgive myself? Do I find time to do the things that I like most? Am I concerned about my happiness? Do I invest time for my holistic growth? To be in touch with oneself requires a shift of one’s attitude about growth. In the journey down the river of life, compassion acts as the gentle breeze that helps the ship to sail. The whole hearted acceptance of oneself in compassion will enable to appreciate and accept other as well.

The young have a tremendous capacity to love:

“What it means to love oneself?” Loving oneself is not doing whatever one desires. On the contrary, it means investing time and energy in all those activities that contribute to the holistic growth of a person. Through one’s experience and understanding of the day to day happenings, one can make appropriate decision to choose those things that foster progress in the intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual areas. The invitation is to exercise “Tough Love,” to choose only those that will enhance one’s integrated growth. In due course of time, one will realise that convictions and consistency developing from within. However, one needs to be compassionate to oneself, because growth is precarious process, not a safe and secure zone but a continuous effort. Being compassionate and tough in loving oneself is an antidote to discouragement and boredom in life.

Continue searching for meaning in life whole heartedly with all the capacity to love. Be compassionate, Be loving and keep soaring higher and higher.

Family in Love

Family in Love
Love is a decision not and not based on one’s likes or dislikes. We live in a world with billions of people. However, each person lives around limited number of people. For example: family, school, college, work-place, faith-community, colony and so on and so forth. It can be further narrowed down to family which is the very foundation of the society; one can also take it in a metaphorical sense for any close human relationships. The challenge here is to create an environment of love in the family.
There are two obvious problems that occur in life: external and internal problems. The former applies to the sicknesses, financial difficulty, and misfortunes, while the latter refers to the misunderstanding, suspicion and breakdown in relationships. Human beings are more affected by the internal problems. When there is love among the family members, the external problems are easy to bear together. Today, most of the families become prey to the internal problems, in some way or the other.  There is misunderstanding between spouses, disrespect for parents, quarrel between parents and children, selfishness, and insincerity. In this atmosphere, no one is going to be truly happy. Can anyone who does not love his or her own family member love the other with whole heart? It is a difficult question. Nevertheless, if love begins from oneself and family, then joy and happiness is guaranteed even in the midst of suffering and hardships.
In simple acts of daily life, one can infuse love in and around his or her little world. Every person is different and special, so respecting the other in word and deed is a requisite in building good relationships. It is also important to give time to one another for in this way, one’s presence itself becomes a gift. People can manage their business but everyone needs a heart that listens without making any value judgement. Kind words, gentle encouragement, helping hand, and sensitivity will do well in contributing to the growth of love in the family.
Be in love...Create love wherever you are...Be the salt giving taste to life...Life is worth living when there is love...
